By the time the dishes were washed and returned to their place on the shelf, dusk had settled over the compound. The last of the daylight lingered at the window, casting the room in soft shades of amber. Outside, the sounds of evening drifted through the thin walls: the clatter of saucepans; the chatter of neighbours returning from work; the shrill laughter of children squeezing the final moments from the day before they were called inside.
