The room was still wrapped in darkness when Kamau’s eyes opened. His alarm had not yet rung. It never needed to. For years, his body had learned that fathers woke before the sun.
He slipped quietly from the thin mattress, careful not to disturb the little figure sleeping beneath the faded blue blanket beside him. For a moment, he simply watched her. One arm hung over the edge of the mattress, her tiny fingers curled loosely as though still holding onto a dream.
